Wisdom Weekly: Outlier Thinking - Give the VIPs in Your Life Your Full Presence

Issue #2026-11

Everyone Was Together… But No One Was Present

Happy Sunday Reader!

We often share your insights with our community, and this update will keep you informed about how your wisdom is inspiring others.

Earlier this week I was spending some time with one of the VIPs in my life at an all-inclusive resort. It’s one of those beautiful, almost surreal environments where people have clearly invested thousands of dollars to step away from their normal routines and enjoy time together. At dinner one evening he quietly pointed something out that I hadn’t noticed yet. A family of six sitting nearby ... everyone on their own device. Another table with a family of three ... the mother and daughter scrolling while the father just looked around the room. A couple next to us spent the entire meal on their phones.

I loved that he noticed it. I also found it a little sad how obvious it was once we saw it. In a place designed for connection, conversation, and shared experiences, devices had aggressively taken over almost every table. And the strange part was realizing that we had become the outliers ... two people sitting together, talking, laughing, and simply being present with one another. It reminded me of something simple and important that feels worth sharing this week.

And that realization led to this week’s reflection.

🧠 TL;DR

Give the VIPs in your life your full presence.

Not partial attention.
Not background listening.

Presence.

Because attention is the most valuable gift you can give.

If we were sitting together with a pen and a napkin, here’s what I’d write:

“Give the VIPs in your life your full presence.”

Not partial attention.
Not background listening.
Presence.

In a world where everyone is competing for your attention, the rarest gift you can offer someone is your undivided focus.

No phone.
No notifications.
No glancing down at a screen every few minutes.

Just you, fully there.

Think about the people who matter most in your life.

Your partner.
Your kids.
Your closest friends.
The teammates who trust you.

These are the VIPs.

And yet, if we’re honest, they often get what’s left over after everything else has taken its share of our attention.

Work.
Email.
News.
Social media.

We tell ourselves we’re listening. But we’re half-present.

And people feel that.

Presence is powerful because it communicates something words often can’t:

“You matter.”
“I’m here.”
“This moment is important.”

When someone receives that kind of attention, something shifts.

They open up more.
They think more clearly.
They feel valued.

Great leaders understand this.

They know that the quality of their attention shapes the quality of their relationships.

It doesn’t take hours.

Sometimes the most meaningful thing you can do is give someone ten minutes of complete presence.

Put the phone down.
Make eye contact.
Ask a real question.
Listen without planning your next response.

Those small moments compound over time.

Because attention is the currency of connection.

And the people who matter most deserve the richest investment.

So here’s the simple reminder for this week:

When you’re with the VIPs in your life, be with them.

Fully.

Because presence is the most valuable gift you can give.

Make it a great week,

Govindh

We often share your insights with our community, and this update will keep you informed about how your wisdom is inspiring others. Earlier this week I was supporting a leadership team through a series of conversations about growth, responsibility, and how we support the people around us. As the discussion unfolded, something powerful surfaced in the room. One leader shared how quickly they tend to jump in to fix problems...

I’ve been watching Aileen Gu lately ... and not just for her Winter Olympic record, which is extraordinary by any standard. Yes, she competes for China. Yes, she’s already built one of the most impressive competitive resumes you’ll see at 22 years old. But what has struck me most isn’t the medals....

If you can't say it somewhere safe, it will show up somewhere unsafe.

Recent public events have reminded us, again, that leadership without integration eventually collapses under its own weight. When influence grows faster than self-awareness, the consequences ripple far beyond one individual. The time is now. If you feel the call to lead, to serve, to step into...
